Principe Real and Bairro Alto

Today we are going to talk about a royal prince in Lisboa, or what the locals call, Principe Real. Its a totally hip, gentrified, up and coming area of Lisbon that is right next to Bairro Alto and Miradouro São Pedro de Alcantara. If you like high end fashion (Haute Couture), really expensive tapas, and spending an afternoon browsing and shopping, then Principe Real is the place. One fine day we decided to walk around this area. After browsing the shops we got a bit thirsty and we arrived at this nice cafe called Nata with a giant wooden chair in the backyard. Amazing!

Queijo!

Hannah, what are you doing?

From the above picture you can see that this cafe has a grass backyard too! They make their own pasteis de nata and serve espressos with Aguardente in them!

Fast forward to later that night and we found ourselves in Bairro Alto again! Pretty much every night in the summer looks like this after midnight in Bairro Alto. It was crowded, but luckily, I was with locals so we avoided the touristy places and found a cool bar run by some people from Switzerland. It’s called Heidi Bar.

Now, I haven’t yet sampled all the nightlife here in Lisbon, but I can say that there’s something for everyone. It is very unique. You don’t really have uberposh places filled with plastic blondes and 15 pound a pop drinks like in London nightclubs (with the exception of Lux Fragile). It is more of a bar hopping scene that is casual and laid back. There isn’t booming techno music so you can actually have a conversation. The drinks are cheap and strong. Very strong.

Bairro Alto - Fast Forward!

Oh the Kitsch!

You know there’s something to be said about over kitschyness…it’s amazing! Lisbon continues to surprise me even a year after my arrival (gosh it’s been more than a year!). I hope you enjoyed this post about Principe Real and Bairro Alto and please check out the links for more information and comment! *Hugs*

  1. I like Heidi Bar too! I thought it was Swiss LOL! Príncipe Real is the disctrict in Lisbon I would most like to live in.
What’s the name of that caffé with the wooden chair?

  2. Hi,
Just a small correction, that linked photo to “Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara” is actually of Miradouro da Graça on the castle hill/Alfama.
To answer Vanessa’s comment, that café in Principe Real is called Nata Lisboa and it’s part of a gallery/bookstore called Fabrico Infinito.
Finally, in addition to Heidi, another cool bar in Bairro Alto is Artis. It’s a wine bar with a really nice atmosphere to stay all night long.
