Fado, Meia Noite, Uma Guitarra

Alfama – Largo Chafariz de Dentro

Welcome back friends and loved ones! Today’s post is going to be about something sad :( …Actually there isn’t a single word for the emotion that describes what Fado is trying to convey. That feeling in Portuguese is called “Saudade”, which, in my best translation, can be close to meaning “extreme longing and nostalgia for the past and lost loves.”

June is probably the best month all year in Lisbon. You have the Festas da Cidade, the marchas, and Portugal in the Euroleague football tournament. All of which combine to form a spirit of excitement in the city. One of the best parts of Festas da Cidade are all the free concerts that happen in various squares throughout the city. Every Saturday in the month of June, Lisbon puts on a live Fado show in Largo Chafariz de Dentro, right next to the Museo do Fado.

This night was June 16th, 2012 and it featured Marta Pereira da Costa, quite a beautiful young lady who plays a mean Portuguese guitar. Alongside her several Fadistas were invited to sing Fado songs. I happened to record a few of them!

The first song I recorded is a song by the most famous Fadista of all time, Amália Rodrigues. The song is called “Acho Inúteis as Palavras”, or “I find words useless”.

Wow! That dude can sing. The second invitee came up on stage after a long instrumental interlude. I forgot to write down the names of the fadistas. Maybe someone can identify them from the pictures and post them in the comments?

She’s got some pipes! Well I hope you enjoyed listening to Fado, and let me know if you are coming to Lisboa! It’s a great town. Until next time!

Ate Já!

  1. Hello. Thank you for your story and photos. I was at this concert. Second fadishtas – Marco Rodrigues. Then sang Rodrigo Costa Felix. The girl singer I really liked but unfortunately, I don’t know her name.

  2. You’re welcome. Yes, Lisbon is lovely city. I have very good memories of Portugal and Portuguese people. :)
